I don't think we'll be using this directory at all since Sapper is in maintenance mode

I don't think it can be because it's basically empty. There's also nothing showing on the Sapper site. There was an issue requesting it https://github.com/sveltejs/sapper/issues/1113 but it doesn't look like something that was ever implemented
