Enhancement: "hello world" program to start from

There's no worked example, so there are barriers to entry to newbies, and 
anyone (including old farts like me) who want to test the program on something 
simple before spending time figuring out what the authors think everyone 
already knows... but don't!

I put one in the FAQ as a comment (and attached it below), but you probably 
should put it in at the bottom of the "Getting Started" page, as a prerequisite 
to the more abbreviated examples.
