I'm trying to get my Echo connected as a BT speaker to my Pi as well.
Sometimes I had sound coming FROM my TV - it seems that it connects as a2dp_source (or at least as well as a2dp_source).
I never heart something from my echo while connected. Only a little cracking sound when I killed my pulseaudio.
Did you have any success or did you make any progress?
Thank you very much in advance
Thorston,
I have not worked on it further. I could consistently pair it automatically via my script with the original model Echo. With my older Echo Dot I could manually get it paired through trial and error. With the new style Echo Dot I wasn't able to get it paired. All these attempts were Raspberry Pi pairing with Echo as it's speaker. I have a feeling it may change as the Echo firmware is updated from time to time.

This continues to be problematic. I've had good luck with the code on regular Echo devices (2 tested). I've had to intervene manually on the new Echo Dot (1 tested). And although I succeed in pairing to the original Echo Dots (1 tested) -- I've never gotten audio output to work -- and it results in the Echo not being able to work normally at the same time.
