Some history is useful because it explains where we're typing into a computer at all, which is actually a fairly unusual thing to do these days. But I agree, looking at https://github.com/swcarpentry/bc/blob/master/novice/shell/00-intro.md, the history lessons could definitely be abbreviated. You could probably replace a paragraph and a half with: "There is a long standing tradition of interacting with computers with what is essentially a modified typewriter."
A learner writes, "The history of computers in 1950 and 1980 were distracting, however, we think it is interesting piece of information."
