tighten up the intro #131

These are small changes, mostly to punch things up a bit. (FYI: I'm make one or more PRs per section, going forward.)

BTW do we have a line break policy? I am leaving weird ragged lines, as long as it will make the diff smaller. Or should I be rewrapping?

I think we can clean up line breaks when we are closer to a final draft.

These changes look good to me.

Anyone: do we have a convention about committing, e.g., the compiled PDF when we propose changes to the main .tex file?

I've been rebuilding and committing the PDF after I do desktop merges, but it's not urgent. I'll do it right now.
