accessible. For those who find Git's command-line syntax inconsistent
and confusing, Mercurial is
a good choice; Bitbucket provides
free hosting for both Git and Mercurial repositories, but does not
have nearly as many scientific users.
I want to rephrase the bit about free stuff now that GitHub provides unlimited free private repos to academics and nonprofits. It also feels like GitLab deserves a mention.
