performance improvement #4

f.stat() seams to use some performance, can be done later
unfortunately code is a bit less readable
reading a single waveform goes from 40sec to 8.5sec

Not sure if this makes sense?

This looks good - I don't see a single downside to this. Thanks!

In general I think there are lot more optimizations that could be performed if it is only called for a single file. 8.5 seconds still seems pretty long to me.
