GPS is not automatically started as GMap (I think it's a security check).
But GTalkSMS use GPS when it's enabled or wifi or phone cells otherwise.

I have try to send "where" command to my Galaxy S, with the GPS disabled, and
the GPS is not turned on...
It's possible to get information about wifi connected to the phone (SSID,
signal...) or about the wifi networks that the phone can see? something like a
command "wifi" or/and "wifis".
It could be very interesting get information about GSM/UMTS cell id.

As I said before GPS is not automatically started as GMap.
It's a Android issue, GPS must be enabled manually
Please open an another enhancement request for the wifi command, it's a good
one :)
