Low FPS on non-top laptop #30

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Celeron M550 2.00GHz
2. Intel GMA X3100 GPU
3. Ubuntu Linux

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Comfort play expected. Game FPS is Sinus Graph like, with 1-2 secs period.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version 0.2.9-1... Ubuntu Karmic (9.10).

Please provide any additional information below.
Any Graphic Modes, fullscreen or not, problem exists.

PS Video Playback, Gnome (or Compiz?) effects, game Battle for Wesnoth - works 
great 
on any conditions, so i think system and driver are fine. But you are better to

Tried version for Windows. Very long time to start new survival (about a 
minute).
Problem with FPS is not present. But at EVERY shot on enemy game freeze for 
0.5sec.
Windows 7 (build 7600), other games works fine (about six month), so system and 
drivers are fine.

Have you tried to play something like quake 3 on your linux system? Try to 
disable
compiz or metacity effects.

Battle for Wesnoth is turn-based, so it should be more liberal for system 
resources.

I have no experience of using Intel cards with Mesa so it is needed to 
investigate this.

Behavior of windows version you have described is strange for me, I will check 
the code.

Only with WINE, Quake 3 in window mode 1024x768 max detail has about 40 FPS 
+-10.
Also use WarCraft 3 TFT, many worse than on Windows, but still very playable.

On Windows Long time loading Violetland in the point "Generating Terrain", if 
it 
helps. Freeze may be caused by loading sound/animation/new textures on each hit 
on 
monster, are you using something like this?

Compiz are working fine with any effects, they are don't affects on CPU usage.
But you are wright, full disabling of any effects solves the problem, but it 
appears 
even on minimal using of effects... I like this visual effects but i also like 
the 
violetland as well. The switching between full effects and no effects - are 
there 
any other solving of problem?

I think that freezes on shooting and long wait time on terrain generation are 
caused
of same thing. It may be a way I am using to create stains of blood and corpses 
on
terrain textures instead of simple rendering these images as layers every frame.
Terrain textures are created dynamically from small parts every time at game 
start.
The same mechanism is thus used. So we have a point for research.

Compiz and metacity are using identical mode of work. The issue is not number of
enabled effects but in the mode. These systems are working with opengl directly 
and
all other software must work through them. For example, I have a laptop with Ati
Radeon HD 3850 and I can play without any issues with disabled desktop effects. 
But
if I enable effects, I get to problems at once. I don't know how I can solve 
this
from the game code using opengl.

On win - I also think so (i am beginner in programming, so can think like 
them). 
Using layers may help, but it will cost a lot of system memory (this problem 
will 
appears at the moment of possible game evolution).
On linux - if there are no solution to override compiz during playing the game 
or 
disable effects on start and restoring on exit automatically - then just 
describe 
problem and it's solution in the readme file.
