Yazi fails to use vim and bugs out when opening a specific file #810

What system are you running Yazi on?

Linux Wayland

What terminal are you running Yazi in?

foot 1.16.2 and/or alacritty 0.12.3

Did you try the latest main branch to see if the problem got fixed?

Tried, but the problem still

yazi --debug output

Add `disable_exec_warn = true` to your `yazi.toml` under `[headsup]` to suppress this warning.

Describe the bug

When I went deep into my .steam directory to edit an ini, (~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377160/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Fallout4/Fallout4Prefs.ini), I pressed enter to open the file and vim did not launch. instead it looked like micro launched. I used micro as my EDITOR temporarily, but no longer. As soon as I press one button there is a graphical glitch and I am back in Yazi, except the graphics are not working correctly. Its like the graphics are competing with the text editor I guess?

This happens every time I try to open that file, and every other file I've tried to open works as expected. I've reproduced it with 100% reliability in DWM (X11) and river (wayland). I've reproduced it in both foot and alacritty.

Expected Behavior

The file would just open in vim. (my EDITOR)

To Reproduce

Maybe if you installed steam and fallout 4 and went to that file it would happen for you too. Lol idk.

Configuration

I don't see how config is relevant, but let me know.

Anything else?

I'm on Nixos.

Hi, please do a sh -c "echo $EDITOR" and file -bL --mime-type "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377160/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Fallout4/Fallout4Prefs.ini" and paste the output here.

This output is a bit strange. What version is your file (file --version)? Would passing it a different file path produce the same output?

tripleducky commented 4 months ago

file-5.45 magic file from /nix/store/z5zqrzk4h3g2gqqkw378q5li6l6ppcga-file-5.45/share/misc/magic

I tried moving the ini file to a different location and the same thing happened. I tried opening the file manually (without using yazi) and it worked completely fine. Is that what you're asking? I also tried opening a different ini file with yazi and that worked too.

sxyazi commented 4 months ago

Yes, Yazi matches the rules for opening files based on the mime-type returned by file, but it seems that file returned some unexpected content. Could you upload this ini file for me to test if it's not privacy-related?

sxyazi commented 4 months ago

Unfortunately, I'm unable to reproduce it on my macOS/Arch Linux/Windows.

macOS:

~
❯ file -bL --mime-type /Users/ika/Downloads/Fallout4Prefs.ini
application/x-wine-extension-ini

~
❯ file --version
file-5.41
magic file from /usr/share/file/magic

Arch Linux:

[ika@ika-pc ~]$ file -bL --mime-type '/home/ika/Downloads/Fallout4Prefs.ini'
application/x-wine-extension-ini
[ika@ika-pc ~]$ file --version
file-5.45
magic file from /usr/share/file/misc/magic

Windows:

PS C:\Users\ika> file -bL --mime-type C:\Users\ika\Downloads\Fallout4Prefs.ini
application/x-wine-extension-ini
PS C:\Users\ika> file --version
file-5.45
magic file from /usr/share/misc/magic

Did you use any specific flags when building the file? Please paste the output of file --help and let me see if any necessary options are missing.

tripleducky commented 4 months ago

Interesting. Uhh, building the file? The file is downloaded via steam? Idk. I'm curious now whether this is due to something from valve or something from from Nixos. Here:

I followed your directions for nixos install by the way and just so you know I checked for a mention of wl-clipboard and there was not one, either for optional dependencies or for installation. So I'm assuming that's on whoever packaged the program for nixos? Also FYI I believe you changed the .toml config files on github to say "run" already, whereas the latest version of the program (at least on nixos, even the unstable version) only operates with 'exec.' It took me a while to figure out what was going on.

I'm pretty impressed with yazi by the way, The configuration files are easy to read, its fast (as you know,) and it has all the good stuff built in. Congrats on what you've already achieved!

Can you get its mime-type information if you put the file in another location? This might be a NixOS-specific issue, but unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Nix.

Yes, yazi will sequentially check whether pbcopy, wl-copy, xclip, xsel can be used for clipboard copying. As far as I know, almost all desktop environments have at least one of them installed, which is why it is not listed in the dependency list. But unfortunately, it seems that NixOS does not have them installed. Perhaps it should be mentioned in the installation guide.

Yazi provides official Nix flask and cachex, you can use it directly, and it is up to date. https://github.com/sxyazi/yazi/tree/main/nix

Thanks, its huge to me!

file -bL --mime-type 'Fallout4Prefs.ini' application/x-wine-extension-ini

looks like some steam bs to me.

sxyazi commented 4 months ago

What if you add a vim opener for application/x-wine-extension-ini?

tripleducky commented 4 months ago

yep that solved it.

sxyazi commented 4 months ago

Glad to hear that, even though I'm not sure what exactly happened, but it's working now. Let me close this issue then ;)
