Add automated (custom) overlay to social images #581

Hi everyone

It would be nice, if SEO framework would be able to automatically generate the og-image for a blogpost based on the selected feature image for that post + an "overlay image" (i.e. a partly transparent png file).

Thank you very much for the great plugin!

For sure, this could be a paid extension

Hello!

I can only smell dark patterns for the overlay, such as adding fake 'play' button automatically. That alone doesn't sit well with me. It is also why we (still) haven't added title automation: I don't want to leave the internet a worse place.

Such a feature will also eat up server-resources -- image processing is heavy -- which would make our software unfavourable to hosting parties.

Do you have a use-case where this would be beneficial? Something that you cannot automate using Photoshop et alia?

Hi Sybre

I understand your concerns; I'm coming from the point that I want basically the branding of my company on the og-image like big news companies are doing it.

Here is a random example. You can share this article on Facebook or LinkedIn, and you'll see a logo in the corner. https://www.nzz.ch/gesellschaft/freedom-and-sunshine-for-giorgio-bellini-ld.1624403

Yes, sure, it's possible with Photoshop. I could create another image in a suitable aspect ratio for open graph images and select it additionally to the feature image.

Thanks for your consideration. Best, Steffi

Watermarks?

Example: https://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-watermark/ Been using this plugin for a long time. As far as I remember, in this plugin you can choose the sizes of images that need watermarks. This might solve the issue.

Cool. Thank you, @vralle

Hi. I can see one usecase where this would be beneficial to the Internet. Some medias even do it For instance, when a news article is old enough and has not been updated, the og image would display a warning like "Dated content". I think the Guardian and the New York Times are doing it. Hope this helps
