spacemacs breaking on the addition of packages to dotspacemacs-additional-packages #10644

Closed Fenton-Fenton closed 6 years ago

Fenton-Fenton commented 6 years ago

On adding a package to dotspacemacs-additional-packages emacs will install the package and work perfectly on the first run, or if I reload .spacemacs without closing emacs down. But on starting emacs again spacemacs breaks and fails to load correctly. Taking the offending package out of .spacemacs does not fix this issue and spacemacs only loads properly when I delete .spacemacs and copy in a backup .spacemacs without the additional package. (I have no idea where this behaviour is coming from)

Running emacs with --debug-init would seem to suggest that this is a font based issue, but switiching the font, even to system defaults, doesn't stop this issue from occuring.

Reproduction guide :beetle:

start emacs edit .spacemacs to include a package in 'dotspacemacs-additional-packages' restart emacs- packages install restart emacs - spacemacs fails to load

removing the edit from .spacemacs - spacemacs still fails to load

Observed behaviour: :eyes: :broken_heart:

For this example I have used writeroom-mode, but I have tried this with other packages, even on graphics related ones and I keep getting the same issue.

I'm using a package (xclip) via dotspacemacs-additional-packages and I don't encounter this problem. Since you removed the package and that did not fix your problem, It's probably that you made a mistake when adding the package and messed up your .spacemacs file.

Please try adding it again and be careful this time. If that does not work please paste a copy of your failing .spacemacs here (make sure you don't have any password written in it before doing that).

Hi @sdwolfz I've tried this over several times and I've run out of ideas on what might be causing this, I imaigine its stemming from something very specfic, but I'm out of ideas as to how to chase this down further.

My full .spacemacs (with an added package) is fairly standard and is as follows:

Just tried out your config, I have no problem with it, but I'm running emacs master branch built from source and spacemacs develop branch.

Try using spacemacs develop first.

cd ~/.emacs.d
git checkout develop

If that does not work, then try installing emacs master with brew:

brew install emacs-plus --HEAD
Fenton-Fenton commented 6 years ago

Switching to the develop branch has fixed this issue for me, god knows what was causing it but if it is not going to be an issue for future releases I'm not going to investigate this further for now.
