What do you mean by "in helm"?
I suspect that this is not a bug. SPC
bindings shouldn't be available in a helm session. If I'm mistaken please reopen.
Sorry @TheBB -- that was poorly titled. The issue is that SPC h d
doesn't work on OS X for me, and hasn't for some time.
Okay, can you check C-h k SPC h d
? Do you have some customizations that bind this key? For example, check if it works with the default dotfile.
I get buffer is read only: #<buffer *spacemacs*>
.
I haven't intentionally enabled any key bindings that would conflict with this. And as far as I can remember this was a problem even for me even on a fresh install with no outside packages.
Well, do it in a different buffer then.
@mclearc That read only message sounds like you're trying to insert text, which sound like you are in emacs state? Maybe?
Does M-m h d k
work?
The error happens in a fresh buffer and even right after starting up a new emacs session.
@justbur M-m h d k
gives the same message.
@mclearc mind posting your dotfile?
Sure thing:

Hm works fine on my computer (not using everything you have though). Did you try M-m h d k SPC h d
?
Yeah M-m h d
works where as SPC h d
doesn't. And when I use M-m h d k SPC h d
I get either buffer is read only: #<buffer *spacemacs*>
or it sets a mark. It is super weird.
ok, this is not making sense. What about C-h k SPC h d
?
I should also say that SPC h d
does work if I first type SPC h
and then tab away to another application (or even Finder) and back to type d
.
C-h k SPC h d
gives the same behavior as M-m h d k SPC h d
To be clear, you type C-h k
It should say describe key in the minibuffer. Then you start a key sequence. You type a space and you should get "SPC-" in the minibuffer indicating that this is a prefix key. Next "h" and it says "SPC h-". Then after typing "d" it just sets the mark??
Yes or give the Buffer is read-only: #<buffer *spacemacs*>
message. It is truly bizarre.
but it shouldn't execute a command in the spacemacs buffer when you are getting the description of a key. Something is just not connecting here
The read only message is given to me when I try and enter SPC h d
in the spacemacs buffer, for example.
I initially thought it had to do with running a beta version of El Capitan. But I'm on the release version now so I'm not sure anymore.
Sorry, I'm just not understanding what's going on completely. @TheBB you don't have any ideas do you?
Sorry if I'm not describing the issue clearly. It's a weird bug and I can't see anything in my config that would cause it.
ok, let me try one more time. Tell me at what point your behavior differs from mine
C-h k
in the spacemacs buffer. I get the point in the minibuffer which reads
"Describe key (or click or menu item):"My point is in the minibuffer the whole time. I haven't entered a complete key sequence so no help buffer pops up
Oh! I wonder if your keyboard is effed. Is there a possibility that your control key is malfunctioning? C-SPC
sets the mark
1-3 are the same. When I enter the "d" key I get the Buffer is read-only: #<buffer *spacemacs*>
message and the point moves back to the spacemacs buffer (specifically at the [?]).
C-SPC
works for setting and deactivating a mark.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Indeed. When I get time later today I'll nuke and do another clean reinstall. if that clears things up I'll close the issue. @justbur thanks for your patience!
No, I don't have anything. I've been wanting to use this label…
I finally figured this out. It was textexpander expanding hd
into had
. Some automatic spell-correct snippet I wasn't aware of. Sorry for wasting everyone's time! :/
typing
SPC h
brings up the appropriate menu, butSPC h d
does not work. I get eithermark set
orundefined
. Weirdly, if I command-TAB away to another application and then come back to spacemacsd
will work appropriately.System Info
