I cannot reproduce the freeze, do you do some other operations before the above repro steps ? In which major-mode do you have this issue ?
No other steps.
It happens in Clojure, Markdown and Emacs-Lisp modes. Did not try others.
The freezing happens when executing an avy command while the word is highlighted by the automatic-symbol-highlight. The highlighted word stays highlighted after that, even when moving away from it.
Here is my config:

I confirm the bug. I can reproduce it with my own config, and also with a clean spacemacs with a default .spacemacs

I can't reproduce the freeze, but automatic-symbol-highlight
breaks after SPC SPC
This issue has been automatically marked as stale because it has not had recent activity. It will be closed if no further activity occurs. Please let us know if this issue is still valid!
I'm unable to reproduce this issue.
It might have been fixed upstream, or as a side effect of the recent (jul, aug 2021), symbol highlighting related Spacemacs commits: https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs/commits/develop/layers/%2Bspacemacs/spacemacs-navigation
I can confirm that this works as expected now. Thanks.
It also breaks vim's
