Updated Sphinx to 1.8.5 and fix build errors #865

Symfony.com upgraded the Sphinx version to 1.8.5. This PR updates the build process to use 1.8.5 and fixes some syntax errors (see https://symfony.com/doc/build_errors). Meanwhile, I also improved the usage of the Sphinx PHP extension.

Based on branch activity, I think 1.1 is the oldest still maintained branch? If that's not the case, I'm happy to rebase this PR.
