I was getting an error when I tried running org-novelist-new-story. I think this fixes it.

Can you let me know which version of Emacs you are using, and give me a list of steps to reproduce this error? I've been unable to reproduce it and, as far as I can tell, the suggested code change shouldn't do anything differently from the existing code?
