Clicking "Edit this page on GitHub" produces "You need to fork this repository to propose changes."

Steps to Reproduce 1) Find question answered over 160 times in Forum. Many answers included "this is expected behavior" 2) Find no explanation on syncthing site about how to address this "expected behavior" 3) Look for way to request new FAQ 4) Find "Edit this page on GitHub" 5) Click 6) Github: "You need to fork this repository to propose changes."

Context:

Cloned home directory (including machine name) from a failed laptop to its replacement. This included naming the new machine the same as prior machine.

Recieved: "folder marker missing (this indicates potential data loss, search docs/forum to get information about how to proceed)"

A search of docs/forum found 17 pages of results (more than 160 items to review). (1)

Commentary

  1. When something is asked 160 times, it seems to qualify as a "Frequently Asked Question." Given the consequences (one post: total loss of data), this situation justifies an answer that explains how to diagnose and address this problem that that is reasonably thorough.

  2. I was going to ask why is a bug report the only obvious way to nominate a FAQ ... and then realized an unanswered question that can lead to total data loss is a bug.

I believe this is just how GitHub works, so you likely do need to fork the repository first in order to try editing it. Please keep in mind though that you cannot just edit and apply your changes directly, i.e. they will still need to be approved by the repository maintainers.

When it comes to the folder marker problem, there is already a quite long entry in the FAQ about it at https://docs.syncthing.net/users/faq.html#i-am-seeing-the-error-message-folder-marker-missing-what-do-i-do.
