Apparently mkdocs can't handle the syntax for nested unordered lists suggested by markdownlint, so I reverted the ones I applied in https://github.com/synesthesiam/rhasspy/pull/101. Luckily I discovered mkdocs serve, so I can preview documentation changes in the future before I commit them :-)
