Fix for issue #3 (helpers.t fails on non English locale)

Thank you for finding this bug and the solution. Before I accept the pull request, do you see any other spots that might have a similar issue?

All tests pass under the French locale. I haven't tried all the functions, but so far I don't see any problem.
