Attention to Thermal Design #17

Why/User Benefit/User Problem

Many modern laptops suffer from poor thermal dissipation issues. I have seen many attempts at creating a decent venting solution, but few, if any, seem to stick the landing.

Take, for example, the Thinkpad T480 with the i7-8550u. The design of the laptop does not dissipate heat well enough to compensate for the processor, and thus the processor is never allowed to reach its full 4Ghz potential. This is compounded by a bug in the EC that causes throttling to occur at lower temperatures on Linux than on Windows.

It is incredibly frustrating to have a laptop with such a powerful processor that will never reach its potential.

Description of the feature

As shown with the Thelio, System76 knows a thing or two about thermal design. While compact designs are necessarily more difficult, I believe that System76 has the wherewithal and know-how to pair the right CPUs with the right thermal solutions.

Care should be paid attention to which CPU is selected for which models given the thermal load that the CPU produces and the rate at which the dissipation should occur. Ideally, a processor will be allowed to scale to its full potential without throttling due to poor thermal design.
