Bright, Accurate Display #63

Why/User Benefit/User Problem

iPads and MBP Retina displays have set the bar for displays very high, and once you’ve experienced them, it’s really difficult to settle for something less. It’s not just their high resolution screens, but the brightness and color accuracy and wide color gamut.

I’ve had two System76 laptops, and found both of their built-in displays to be mediocre at best. One of the biggest problems is the lack of brightness, which I haven’t yet seen listed in the feature requests. Also, the colors don’t seem accurate.

Not only is it impossible to do design work without being connected to a good external monitor, the built-in displays are so poor that it’s hard to use them even for casual web browsing.

Description of the feature

Include a display that achieves 400-500 nits, while maintaining accurate color with 100%+ of the sRGB color gamut.

LOL "set the bar", OLED is the bar and apple was 5+ years late to that game. Top of the line color accuracy is prohibitively expensive for consumer products. ( The XDR will be a $6,000 display ) Likely system76 will continue to provide 3 choices cheap IPS, moderate OLED, plug in your own crazy expensive external display. Granted there is a lot of range in OLED color accuracy and brightness (though I find myself on min brightness most of the time), but software has a lot to do with accuracy, so be sure to look into that before dropping $ on hardware.
