rtGui v0.2.2 - by Simon Hall 2007

Operating system: Debian Etch (and debootstrap lenny for rtorrent)

I had the same error. You need to define an absolute path in your .rtorrent.rc
file
for the download directory to get the correct values.

My .rtorrent.rc:

...
# Default directory to save the downloaded torrents.
directory = /torrent/leech
...

Are you running rtorrent and the web interface on the same host?

Web interface running on a Debian Etch, and rtorrent running on a Lenny (in
debootstrap/chroot) on the same host.
(Sorry for my poor english)

Are you running the web server in a chroot, jail or other environment that
prohibits
access to files outside the web servers 'document root' directory?
