Probably a little late to elaborate but are you, by any chance, running an old
version (revision) of MobileTerminal?
The one in Cydia/Telesphoreo repositories is old and doesn't work on iOS 4. You
can read here about installing the updated version:
http://code.google.com/p/mobileterminal/wiki/Installation.
I was in your situation, then I did what it says. Now it works near-perfectly
(there is this first character not getting deleted thing, but i can work with
that).

I had this same issue, this is how i resolved it and what i foun out in the
process. The mobileterminal app that comes included in the "dtunes" app
package is the WRONG mobileterminal(there are 2 by 2 different authors. The
one u need is by author: YourCydiaRepo. this is NOT the one that is included
with dtunes.
Ok, NOW to fix the problem : So uninstall dtunes/mobileterminal in
cydia/managee/packages/dtunes/mobileterminal and click modify then remove.
Now in Cydia/manage/sources type edit/then add. then type the following
source. http://YourCydiaRepo
type add source. Now in Cydia/Search for mobile terminal. NOW be careful
there are 2, you Need the one my the author YouCydiaRepo or it will not fix the
problem. install mobile terminal and Donzo!

To add to my previous comment. Then you just re-download " Dtunes " appin
cydia/search dtunes install. when installing you will get some RED errors
saying it cant overwrite the existing mobile terminal you just installed but
that is what you want. so it will finish downloading and boom shock locka...
you be done! Hope you Enjoyed that Fix
World Peace and Love to All
