so i used netcat to test if stuff would come through like you said and it worked, but im still not getting anything from the reverse shell. Could it be an issue with me using linux on a vm? Or something on the VM needs to have more added?

Yes, configuration of the VM are crucial for this to work. Try the "Bridged" option. Search and read about the difference between the network interface options you have.
