New Flair Ideas #92

Devs - please see this link for a proposed new set of flair to be added. poopv and I collaborated on making these after getting approval from LuckySpammer to start the project - most of them are community suggestions found in various flair threads.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ast5QJTMsXWTdHd4VzR6Ty1fRmJlMHNfNnhKdWdXeEE&usp=drive_web#gid=3

The non-obvious ones:

If the devs like these, I can take the lead (if you want) to getting these made. I would make a thread on /r/TagPro asking for people to make an example flair, then take the most quality person and secretly give them the task of creating them all (so that the flairs are somewhat secret before they are released).

PrivateMajor pls Nelson is a cricket term http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_%28cricket%29

Nelson from the simpsons or something like this would work: http://i.imgci.com/espncricinfo/matchtimeline/Wickets.png

Let's move forward on this. Does anyone have any issues with the proposed list?

There is also the topic of golden flair, which would be a new mechanic where playing enough games with a particular flair on, will get you a new golden version of it.

In this same update, I think it would be handy to give players a random setting. Which will randomly select a flair for them to play with each game.

The random setting sounds rad. I think for daily / weekly / monthly flairs their should be different colors every time you win one (ie: winning a second daily would give you a red daily.)

Tim - I think the geeky TagPro users would like a simpons related flair more than a cricket related flair.

The Pokemon flair is probably the most well liked flair in TagPro. There's nothing more interesting to a group of kids who play an video game together than other video game related stuff.

I have some concerns:

I think these will be hard to find a good icon for:

I think there may be some trademark/licensing issues with these but I am not a lawyer:

Good ones:

Steppin - What makes the pokemon flair alright but potentially not zelda? And why do you say Windows and Simpsons would be in violation?

Thanks for the input. The D20 dice could be difficult I agree, but the volcano could be done I think. Here is an example: http://i.imgur.com/arwXOjU.png

nothing. I think it has the same issues.

Well usage of the logo and character are definitely restricted. Whether how we are planning to use these items is affected or not, I don't know. I just think it's something we should look into before we start using images that might have some restrictions associated with them

Sounds good, totally agreed Steppin the last thing TagPro needs is copyright infringement.

AMorporkian commented 9 years ago

Assuming we don't use an actual image from the source in question (so we have a licensed image) and don't refer to it as the character in question, I'm almost positive it is classified as a derivative work and falls under the transformative use doctrine. We should hit up one of our 25 year old law students and get their opinion on it though.

privatemajor commented 9 years ago

Ankh, I'll ask some of the lawyers I work with.

I'm guessing that if we make the image our-self, and don't name it something explicit (like our Mario flair being called "1-1 complete") we should be alright.

Steppin - I like some of those, but I think what that does more than anything is show how easy it is to get flair made for ideas.

My lawyer friend says Ankh is right about it being classified as a derivative work.
