Error that custom screen not found #264

Closed skazzaks closed 5 years ago

skazzaks commented 5 years ago

I am starting to use webpacker and tailwind for and existing rails project and am running into some problems with custom screens and when webpacker compiles I get the error:

ERROR in ./app/javascript/src/application.scss
Module build failed: ModuleBuildError: Module build failed: Syntax Error

(38:0) No `xs` screen found.

  36 |
  37 | // Tiny Screen
> 38 | @screen xs {
     |            ^
  39 |   // Flex Grid
  40 |   .xs\:flex-grid {

My tailwind.js file has custom screens:

  screens: {
    xs: "420px",
    sm: "576px",
    md: "768px",
    lg: "992px",
    menu: "1100px",
    xl: "1300px"
  },

My application.scss file has:

@tailwind preflight;
@tailwind components;
@tailwind utilities;
...
@import "base/grid";
...

base/grid has:

// Tiny Screen
@screen xs {
  // Flex Grid
  .xs\:flex-grid {
    @apply flex justify-between;
  }
}

My .postcssrc.yml file has:

plugins:
  postcss-import: {}
  postcss-cssnext: {}
  tailwindcss: './app/javascript/src/tailwind.js'

From what I can see, everything is linked up correctly and yet none of the styles make it into the web app, probably since the compilation isn't working. It would seem to me that the tailwind.js isn't getting read/stored correctly since the 'xs' isn't available, but the '@tailwind' calls don't raise any errors.

I am migrating code that someone had in a hugo + tailwind + webpack project over to our existing project and everything worked in their environment, so I expect the problem to be a configuration problem rather than a coding problem. I'm also new to all of these tools, so I might be doing something silly!

skazzaks commented 5 years ago

Still no love - can anyone help?

adamwathan commented 5 years ago

Can you confirm for sure that other changes in your config file are being respected? I wonder if the whole config file just isn't being picked up. Any chance you can create a repo that reproduceS?

skazzaks commented 5 years ago

Looks like maybe it was because I didn't have my tailwind vars in a theme element. When I wrap them in one I get a bit further, but then run into the next problem.

Now I am getting: (10:5)@applycannot be used with.tracking-narrowbecause.tracking-narroweither cannot be found,

from

// Headers
.header {
  // 12
  &-sm {
    @apply text-xs text-green
        uppercase
        font-medium
        tracking-narrow;

    &.-light {
      @apply text-green-light;
    }
    &.-dark {
      @apply text-green-darkest;
    }
    &.-grey {
      @apply text-grey-light;
    }
    &.-white {
      @apply text-white;
    }
  }

My tailwind.js file has the following:
