BTW: facet by range is currently an unreleased feature in Solr (note the "Solr 
3.1" marker in the Solr wiki)

See also facet.query, you can create any arbitrary query there, including range 
queries.

I just noticed that as well.  They really don't strain themselves pointing it 
out in the docs, now, do they? :)

The facet.range.start/end/gap are now in Solr since version 3.1, now on 3.6  - 
is this in development?
