Open Recent... command missing from File menu. #267

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

First of all, if you have any Haxies, InputManagers, SIMBL plugins or
similar operating system hacks installed, please remove them first, restart
the program, and make sure the bug is reproducible without them.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Xee
2. Open the File menu
3. Look for "Open Recent..." menu command.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There is no "Open Recent..." menu command in Xee. It would be expected to be
able to view a list of recently-opened files within Xee. The app appears to be
Cocoa-based, so this feature should be fairly easy to implement.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Xee 2.2, on Lion 10.7.0

Please provide any additional information below.

As Xee does not really open individual files, but browses entire directories,
the behaviour this menu should have is very unclear, and it was intentionally
left out.

Really? Never noticed that. Opening up an image does indeed give access to all
of the other photos in that same directory. Interesting. Thanks.

I really miss this feature and miss it everyday. I'm a developer and I often
need some plans/mockups in front of my nose. So I can have some files opened
for ages and I want to get back to them from time to time to check stuff. When
you relaunch Xee you loose opened file and then there's no way to find out
which one it was from the app. There's "Recent items..." option in Apple main
menu, but sometimes it does not help.

That's very strange for a document-based app to miss this feature, also I'd add that list to a dock context menu (so when you click on Xee icon in the dock along with Options, Hide, Quit you see recent files).

It's not really a document-based app, which is why it's missing. It doesn't
really open files, it opens entire folders.

While it may browse entire photos, it still only displays one photo at a time.
Can the Recents list not be updated as each photo is viewed, or would that be
too taxing?

... browse entire "directories", I meant.

From my quick research, there's no way to change documents in the recent menu,
only to add them. Which would either mean it would get flooded as soon as you
start browsing through images, or that I could only add the first image opened.
Neither seemed like expected behaviour.

Yeah, with standard menu from SDK that's true, but, it seems one could create
it's own recents menu from scratch. Items like [last folder]-[last file from
folder] would be great. But, seems you're not interested in that.

From the eyes of a user this is perfectly a document based App, it looks like I
can open images and, as a killer feature, I can just open other images around
in the folder. I've never thought I'm opening folders here, but, as a developer
I understand your concerns.

I'm not demanding anything or threatening, I bought Xee3 even without that
feature, because it's the only app that suits my needs on a mac. But, as a
customer, If there'll be any alternative (ACDSee for mac does not counts, it's
inflated with unnecessary features and costs like a plane) to Xee3 but with
recents feature I'd chose it.
