After giving this some thought, I'm going to advise all users of eleventy-plugin-sharp-respimg to migrate to the official responsive image plugin eleventy-img which is created by the Eleventy team.
This was a tough decision but I think its healthier for the 11ty community to first reach for the official eleventy-img before other user contributed options. This plugin had a good life, it helped get me acquainted with build-time image transformations using Sharp. And it provided a solid shortcode for creating responsive images.
With all that said, its time to phase it out. I won't delete or archive this repository anytime soon, but I don't plan on pushing any new changes or features moving forward. Feel free to continue using the plugin in your 11ty sites, but I highly recommend migrating to eleventy-img for a more robust and faster solution.
I advise users to migrate to the official eleventy-img plugin for handling build-time image transformations. If you're here for the eleventy-photo-gallery, versions v1.3.0+ now use eleventy-img :)
