Does user get asked if they want the update? #11

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

I downloaded Google Earth 5 and was told that the only way to get it was to
install the Google updater on my Macintosh running OSX 4.11. How do I find
what version it is?

Please provide any additional information below.

I know this list is for developers but I can't find any information for
users. I find the idea of an automatic updater constantly running on my
computer to be disturbingly intrusive.

What told you "the only way to get it was to
install the Google updater on my Macintosh running OSX 4.11" - you should be
able to download the disk image
from http://earth.google.com .

I see that I can download and install Google Earth that way. The updater came
in when
I tried to check for updates from within Google Earth. Under the Help menu, I
selected "Check for updates online". I should have documented the screens that
came
up. I assure you that I saw no way to get Google Earth without saying yes to the
automatic updater. It said that it was so superior to manual downloads that
manual
downloads of updates are no longer supported. However, now I have found a google
group with Mac users as concerned as I am with this topic:
http://groups.google.com/group/google-earth-browser-
plugin/browse_thread/thread/146882feca2788c3/10179b3a75147976?lnk=raot

It seems that they now have to prepare a special uninstall of the updater
script.

This is not an Update Engine issue.
