Updater continually asking for password

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Just downloading and installing Google Updater
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Only expect to see password required for installation of new software when 
necessary, not every hour, as is happening currently

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Latest version, on MacOS 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

Please provide any additional information below.

Hi, I just got a new macbook pro today, updated it with 10.6.2 snow leopard and 
started getting the Google 
update installer menu asking for my password.
Sounds identical to the problem reported above.

This is the original Google Updater (a meta installer for Desktop, way back in 
the day), we sunset it awhile 
ago, but it looks like some are still kicking around.

If you have a Google Updater icon in /Applications, try running it .
You should be able to click the Google Updater entry in the table, and
then uninstall it.

If that doesn't work, you can remove the whole /Library/Google/Google\
Updater , and any Google Updater icons in /Applications.

If there's not stuff in /Library, look in ~/Library

I tried to find mdalrymple@google.com's files, but found nothing matching in my 
iMac, so I simply located 
Google Updater and forcibly trashed it and associated files using AppCleaner. 
Will wait and see if the ghost is 
gone from the machine. WTF, Google? You're supposed to be better than this. 
You're starting to act like Apple 
now. Wish Jobs would issue some fix for Snow Leopard which has turned my 
machine into a geriatric patient. 
Tried all the fixes to no avail. I'm spending more time as a mechanic lately 
than a computer user. It's like having 
Windows again.

I tried the suggestion from mdalrym to uninstall the via the Google Updater but 
received 
a notice that I could not before removing all Google Apps that depend on it.  
No list of 
dependent apps is provided.

I thought you knew how to behave and be a good net citizen. I like your 
applications like Picasa and Chrome 
but I really hate your UpdateInstaller. This is interrupting my work all the

Hi, can you try this command in the terminal (all one line)

rm -f ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/SoftwareUpdates/manifest.xml 
/Library/Caches/Google/SoftwareUpdates/manifest.xml

And let me know if that stops it.

Have tried all fixes recommended without success.
The command line rm -f ~/Library/Application\
Support/Google/SoftwareUpdates/manifest.xml 
/Library/Caches/Google/SoftwareUpdates/manifest.xml

Gets permission denied.

Has someone found the remedy. This thread seems to have stopped.

I pulled everything that has "google" in the name anywhere it was found in the 
library.  I found several items.  
Gone -- deleted.  Perhaps this works.  Hope so.

Word to Google -- because we rely on our machines to function properly, and 
Google makes a mess of things, 
we simply don't need ya any more.  Comprendes?  

I've been burned on this one -- and from here on -- nada, zilch, bupkiss trust 
in what I download from 
Google.  I will not miss anything I've tried or trusted.  

On to Apple Software!!

I've just been hitting cancel for months, and then today, I finally used 
appzapper on it from the applications folder by dragging the icon to appzapper.

But seriously, I know I'm mild manner and just dealt, but google should have, 
at the very least, not made it so hard to find a solution.

After deleting all Google apps on my Mac because of this problem, I today 
wanted to install Google Earth again and yes I installed Chromium as well. But 
when I started up Google earth it always wants to your software updater. As I 
can see In this thread nothing has been done to fix the problem so I will  
uninstall all Google apps again because google software update gave me the 
worst time ever in over 10 years of MacOS.

I have two MacBook Pros, and the GoogleUpdateInstaller asks me now every 30 
minutes on both machines to type in my password to allow it to make changes.

1 - there is no change that needs to happen, nor is there an update to install
2 - does it not have the capability to remember passwords b/c it asked if it 
could access my keychain?

I'm not sure what's going on, but the Picasa uploader is what is causing this 
on my machines.  I've had Google Earth installed forever and never saw this 
(see attached image) before?  The comment from Google Rep in #12 gets 
'permission denied' when I pasted that into the terminal. & why am I in the 
terminal?  This software is that wishy washy that you need to hack into your 
mac's core to upload multiple files to Picasa?  I am going to research what 
appzapper is, but this isn't productive use of time. 

WHAT WILL STOP THIS MESSAGE FROM DISRUPTING MY WORK?

Comment seven seemed to work for me. Deleted both Google folders from both 
Library folders too.

The same problem started on my machine when I tried to install Picasa - and it 
failed with an "unexpected error" (I did not expect such a bad error message 
from google...)

I have now tried the solution from comment seven - alas it required that I also 
deleted my google notifier.

I have a MacBook (OSX 10.6.4) and also have begun seeing this message reappear 
several times a day after downloading the Picasa installer yesterday. Keep 
typing in my password but it keeps coming back. PLEASE HELP ME END THIS 
ANNOYANCE!!

Have been working with Picasa Albums Uploader for some years. Only since 
yesterday i keep getting the above mentioned pop-ups. Very annoying, Google!!!!

My Mac started doing this just three months ago. I tried Mr Dalrymple's 
terminal line to no avail.

This led me to find Google updater in the apps folder. When I launched it, it 
showed two Picasa uploaders, too.

I deleted the two uploaders and the system then allowed me to uninstall Google 
updater. Will let you know if there's still a problem, but there doesn't seem 
to be ... so far!
