In both landscape and portrait mode, the strip used to be initially displayed to fit the screen width.
I'm not sure when this changed but it probably came with the introduction of the zoom.
I believe it's better to make it this way so the reading is easier for tall strips with the user only having to scroll instead of pinch to zoom and drag around.
