Can't add a 2nd product variation

Steps to reproduce the issue:

Drop database, recreate & /dev/build?flush=1
In the CMS, Pages tab, select a product
    Go to the 'Variations' tab
    Click 'Add Variation'
    Type '1' in the price and Item ID fields
    Click 'Save'

The button now shows...
Validation checking in progress
...and a spining animation.

The button is disabled, so the only way out is to close the box.  When
'Add Variation' is clicked, the disabled 'Validation checking
in progress' button is shown and stays.  There are no JavaScript
errors in the Error Console. (I'm using FireFox 3.6.13)
