2021 schedule and feedback #2

Day 1 (4h session)

Covered sections 1-4 of https://tavareshugo.github.io/r-intro-tidyverse-gapminder/
Sticky note feedback for improvement, main points were:
- pace faster for the beginning intro
- more and harder exercises

There were a few people that already seem to know R, but even from them there was good feedback in that there were some tips that were useful to them and they were happy to go through materials at their own pace as well.

Day 2 (3h session)

Covered sections 5-6 (up to and including the first exercise)
Sticky note feedback, main points:
- Pace seemed better this time
- Still request for more/harder exercises

Day 3 (4h session)

Covered rest of section 6 (filtering NA's and ifelse()), section 8 and then section 7 (swapped the order of these two sections). The grouped mutate and filter were only quickly shown from the materials (due to time limitations). The day also started with a quick recap of dplyr functions from the previous day.
Sticky note feedback, main points:
- generally good feedback
- again more/advanced exercises

Day 4 (4h session)

Covered sections 9 and 10. Then moved on to the Data Structures, functions, loops.
- It was the first time doing these latter materials. It seemed to work OK, the first part is just showing the materials (with a little bit of demo on the console), which might be a bit boring. Slides for that first part might be useful. The extended exercise worked well: everyone generally managed to complete the exercise within 45m or so. Went around each student's desk to see how they were doing and give extra tips etc.
Sticky note feedback, main points:
- generally good
- some people suggest having more longer exercises like this last one would be great.

Idea for the future: to have a long self-paced exercise at the end of each day's session.

In conclusion, the schedule this year worked quite well, here is a note for next year:

Day 1 (4h): sections 1-4 of https://tavareshugo.github.io/r-intro-tidyverse-gapminder/
Day 2 (3h): sections 5-6 (up to and including the first exercise)
Day 3 (4h): section 6 (filtering NA's and ifelse()), section 8 and then section 7
Day 4 (4h): sections 9 and 10 and Data Structures, functions, loops.
