ESC should cancel entering text at the command line and it should escape from secondary reports to the default one. Perhaps you're seeing a bug? How does one reproduce it, or explain more thoroughly please?

I move the cursor down to a task, I hit and the task info command displays the full details for that task, but the command-key-bindings are inactive.

If, while looking at that task, I want to add a tag, or mark it done, I have to hit before doing so. This is a considerable pain because a) I'm never entirely sure where I'm going to end-up after hitting and b) after the screen refreshes to whatever listing I came from, I have to re-focus on the task presently selected and re-decide to perform that action upon it before navigating away.

on further experimentation, I see that some of the keybindings are active, but not done, Xdelete nor tag, seemingly, none of the ones that would act on the task in view.

Ahh! When in view-a-task-mode, the operations available are limited. That's not very well thought out. And certainly should be fixed.
