Change all diagrams into floating figures?

Currently they're inline in the flow of paragraphs in the text: journals don't like that

It looks like this will require one of:

use the pandoc-fignos tool to add figure numbering to pandoc, so we can use that in the existing WMD-enhanced pandoc manuscripts. This looks like it requires a more recent release of pandoc than the one that we have in the Ubuntu 1.13 release we're using. Would have to install from source (could be a quagmire) or upgrade to a newer Ubuntu (could definitely be a quagmire, though ultimately needs to happen).
convert the manuscripts to WMD-enhanced LaTeX rather than pandoc markup
use ... escaping to write the figures in LaTeX embedded in the markup: this will require using the same kind of escaping for numbered figure references; and that part of the markup will only work in .pdf output, not .html, .epub, etc. (Have I done this before? If so I can steal code and it'll be easier.)

I might test out switching them from .md.wmd to .tex.wmd. It would be convenient at this point to write in standard LaTeX anyway.

Conversion to .tex.wmd seems to work fine. Done, with first paper, will do second paper.
