Put an explicit version name in the path /v1/ and commit to & share the timeline of guaranteed backward compatibility

This needs consideration. One of the desirable features of PIDs is that they should provide a human readable web page for Accept:text/html requests, and machine readable data for Accept:application/json requests, from the same URL. So we might not want to include ‘api’ or version numbers in our URLs after all.
