@Tasilee how about putting together a webinar on this topic (after your upcoming webinar, of course)? It would also be interesting to know if anyone is already collecting / sharing this type of data when they are collecting for museum voucher. Will specimen data, (does specimen data) already have telemetry / camera trap data associated? linked?

It would be an excellent idea to have a session on camera trap and telemetry (bio-logging) data, but I'm just the dummy who has been encouraging the development of effective international standards in these two data domains. In my role as Scientific Advisor to the Atlas of Living Australia, I raised the issue some years ago when I spotted Darwin Core records in the Atlas corresponding to telemetry 'pings'. There was a degree of madness there that needed addressing, for all similar agencies.

I'd suggest separate sessions on Camera Trap data and Telemetry data. It looks like the camera trap standards work is more advanced but I have not kept up with it, and thanks to JShippee and Kyle for the links - and BTW: Kyle - that GBIF link is busted.

Currently, an enthusiastic cross section of the bio-logging gurus/practicioners have taken up the challenge and have been working through options that will be delivered and discussed at the [6th International Bio-Logging Science Symposium] (https://www.bio-logging.net/Symposium/) at Lake Constance, Germany, 25–29 September 2017 entitled ‘A future for a common bio-logging language? Discussions about data standards and interoperability in the bio-logging world’. They key players (in alphabetical order) include Alessandro Oggioni, Ferdinando Urbano, Francesca Cagnacci, Hamish Campbell, Holger Dettki, Karen Evans, Peggy Newman, Peter Desmet, Sarah Davidson and me.

There are likely two bio-logging standards being discussed - one for capturing all the details of the sensor-based data (using SensorML maybe) and one for the exposure of bio-logging data in 'Darwin Core'-type repositories such as GBIF, the ALA, SANBI, CRIA, BISON etc. So, post September for a Darwin Core Hour would seem expedient.

@Tasilee seems we need two webinars then. Can you help us find someone to present on either or both topics (Camera Trap data and Telemetry data)? Since the Camera Trap data standards may be further along, perhaps that one first. We'd need a very introductory presentation. Many in the community will have no idea about this work or what the data is like....

A bit of an update since this topic was originally submitted. OBIS hosted a workshop on Animal Tracking and Telemetry April 23 - 26, 2018 to look at using OBIS-ENV-DATA (Event Core) for tracking data. One product from that workshop was a meeting report which if anyone is interested you can find here. Another product was initial guidelines for using Darwin Core for telemetry data and use cases published to the TDWG Github. There is a session on this topic at the upcoming TDWG if anyone is interested in attending. We (Peggy Newman, Jon Pye, and myself) have spoken to Stan about kicking off a TDWG Interest Group/Task Team. All of this is to say that there is a lot relatively recent activity on this topic at least from the animal tracking and telemetry perspective. I'm not sure if it's ready for a presentation just yet but might be in the relatively near future.

I still think the camera trap standards work is probably a little ahead of the telemetry work. The person who seems to have the most experience on the camera trap data/metadata standards is Paul Meek: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/about-us/science-and-research/staff/staff-profiles/paul-meek. He did a Churchill Fellowship on camera trap standards and also published this handy guide: https://www.pestsmart.org.au/camera-trapping-for-wildlife-surveys/. I am currently involved in a discussion with Siddeswara Guru (TERN), Peter Brenton and Nick Dosremedios (ALA), Patrick Tegart (Department of Environment and Energy), Paul Flemons (Australian Museum), Mike Liddell (James Cook University), Adam McSorley (NSW Department of Environment), Danielle Stokeld (Northern Territory Department of the Environment), Kerry Levett (Australian national Data Service), Andrew Tokmakoff (University of Adelaide) about standards for camera trap data. I think we are pretty close (a month) to agreement on a camera trap standard/vocabulary for data/metadata, a Darwin Core view and an EML view. Fingers crossed. This will hopefully be a 'straw man' for international discussion.

I was the one who encouraged Peggy to setup a session for telemetry data for the TDWG meeting (that I will hopefully be attending). It would therefore seem expedient to consider presentations post TDWG. I am certain that there are (read SHOULD BE!) plenty of synergies between the camera-trap and animal telemetry standards. One lives in hope.

BTW, my interest (as noted in my August 2017 post) is how these data are best exposed via Darwin Core (and obviously what gaps/issues exist in Darwin Core). I do need to revisit any new publications and reports.

With respect to the camera trap part of this thread, I would like to note that Audubon Core now has a functioning Maintenance Interest Group that can charter task groups that want to propose "enhancements" (e.g. coordinated term addition of terms related to a particular technology, application profiles, etc.) to the standard. For example there is an ongoing effort to charter a task group to propose terms needed to describe 3D imaging. So if efforts are close to a "standard" on camera trapping, it would be great to actually make it part of a TDWG standard by proposing the addition to Audubon Core of missing terms needed to describe camera trap metadata.

The AC Maintenance Group has its "annual review" meeting scheduled at Dunedin on Tuesday, Aug 28 at 12:30 PM. At that meeting we will be considering priorities for the upcoming year. So that would be an opportunity to talk about the possibility of chartering a task group to make a proposal related to camera trapping. There is also a more "informational" workshop on Monday at 4 PM where there will be time for participants to discuss gaps in Audubon Core as it currently stands.
