- What exactly does it mean to say that a standard is "retired"?
- There is a distinction between standards that aren't maintained any more and those that aren't used any more. Some standards may not be maintained because their isn't an active group to maintain them. But they may still be used. The criterion for retiring a standard should be when it isn't used any more.
- There isn't any real mechanism for maintaining standards that aren't vocabularies. So a task group would probably need to be formed for any major updates.
There are 13 TDWG Standards that fall into the "Prior Standards" category, two draft standards, and four "2005 Standards". Two previous issues (https://github.com/tdwg/tag/issues/20 and https://github.com/tdwg/tag/issues/21) involve a review of prior standards in an attempt to make it clearer which are actually in use and are recommended, and which aren't actually used.
A related issue to create an overview of the TDWG landscape (https://github.com/tdwg/tag/issues/16) has had no activity for five years, is unclear about its deliverable, and doesn't seem to be a priority.
As a part of the suggestion coming out of the 2022 annual meeting that we should create some sort of history of TDWG efforts and task groups, I'm combining all three of these issues into this one, as the first step of these other issues would be to do a review and summary of the current situation of all of our standards.
