tdwg / tcs2

The TCS 2 Task Group will turn TCS into a form in which it can be maintained. The new version of TCS will be a vocabulary standard like Darwin Core and Audiovisual Core and will complement these other existing TDWG standards.

We (or some of us) have been calling this verbatim name, but, as @deepreef has pointed out before in a comment in the working document, this is a name string (literal), which can be a verbatim name, but does not have to be. The TCS Guide suggests it, rather than the TaxonName object, be used for vernacular name strings. If we specifically want a verbatim name string, that requires a new property.

I have mapped this to http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/scientificName. Just noting this, as we have not discussed this before.

I am actually still in favour of verbatimNameString. For a string representation of the taxonName we could either borrow dwc:scientificName and dwc:vernacularName or just say there is a literal alternative in Darwin Core.

Regarding what I wrote a few months ago, https://github.com/tdwg/tcs2/issues/3#issuecomment-898292639:

We (or some of us) have been calling this verbatim name, but, as @deepreef has pointed out before in a comment in the working document, this is a name string (literal), which can be a verbatim name, but does not have to be. ...in the meeting this morning (#201), we decided that this is the same term as the TCS //DataSet/TaxonConcepts/TaxonConcept/Name and that we are just making the meaning or usage more explicit (even we can be pragmatic sometimes).

This was not in TCS 1 and should be proposed separately later. I also do not think this property belongs on a Taxon Concept. The only sensible use I see for it (with the classes we've got now) is in the Taxon Name class, if the spelling of the name as it was originally published has been corrected or another spelling has been conserved. If and when a Treatment class has been added, it could be there, but one would only be recording errors that people have made or differences of opinion that people might have about the spelling of names.
