Archive pre-2006 TDWG conferences #44

The year, city, country and host/venue of pre-2006 TDWG conferences are listed at http://www.tdwg.org/past-meetings/, but almost all links are dead except for the 2002 http://www.cria.org.br/eventos/tdbi/.

If we can't track down documents for those meetings, I don't think it makes sense to create separate pages. @stanblum should we:

Note that the conferences are already listed in the sidebar. If helpful, we could include the city in the title, e.g. 2017 - Ottawa instead of TDWG 2017

Regarding the side menu, here are the different options. Note that the title update also affects the title of the page.

1. Years

Clean and simple, but harder to find back a conference where you only remember the town

years

2. Year/city

Easier to find back by town

year-city

3. Year/city/country

Includes country: easier to find, makes for longer titles

year-city-country

4. Reverse order

Same as before, but in reverse order

year-city-country-reverse

I like the town (maybe town country) options better, in reverse order. @stanblum thoughts?

I would then also opt for a pre 2006 page and not include a table with all conferences on the main page.

I like the reverse order (last one), but really dislike the lack of states when referring to United States --if we ever met in Springfield or Urbana or a number of other names, most states have these city/town names so disambiguation would be a nightmare. I'm not familiar enough with the naming conventions elsewhere to know if this is a problem in other countries (Canada? Brazil? UK?). Possibilities I see include:

  1. Woods Hole, MA, United States
  2. Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA
  3. Woods Hole, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
  4. Woods Hole, Massachusetts
  5. Woods Hole, MA, USA I would favor #2 followed by #1, and would use the rationalization that disambiguation trumps uniformity and the abbreviation for United States as USA (cf. Wikipedia) is well-known in English.

It would also bring up the designation of "China" for PRC and any other officially lengthened names. Even Kenya is officially the Republic of Kenya.

@gkampmeier updated: town, country in reverse order + states for USA conferences. I think for the other conferences/countries there is no confusion. But I didn't think was any confusion with the conferences in the United States either. 😄

new-names

Kenya, China, United States of America are the terms used ISO 3166, but agree to use shorter and well known "USA"

Now my original question remains regarding the table vs separate page for pre-2006 (my preference)

peterdesmet commented 6 years ago

Based on http://www.tdwg.org/past-meetings/ created a separate page for pre-2006 conferences.
