Announcements Tab #122

Closed JonathanZwiebel closed 10 years ago

JonathanZwiebel commented 10 years ago

This should have pretty much all the news for Paly Robotics.

It does not necessarily need to be a tab, it could be integrated into the front page or it could be on the side, but it should not just be twitter, facebook or a blog.

tekknolagi commented 10 years ago

There is an integrated Jekyll blog that we should use.

I've been thinking about this - I suggest calling it news, having a photo stream, and the news headline that Spencer made.

No, that is not what I meant. I would normally agree with you guys, except having an announcement tab is probably the MOST important thing on the site. This will not be for us to post fun images from competitions or to write about some unimportant side issue. This is where the up-to-date information should be.

It doesn't matter if it looks like shit because if it isn't there, in a very clear, very concise format, our website has lost a great deal of functionality.

tekknolagi commented 10 years ago

Two things.

  1. I don't appreciate the language.
  2. It is the least important for this release, because it's not slated for this release. Don't change priority tags without consulting. We have Twitter and Facebook for now, and this can be dealt with once we fix our existing issues.

I know, but right now we are like 30 min away from pushing a bunch of updates, might as well get those done first and then make the new page

Also, currently there isn't very much going on, besides all important information is already getting emailed. Lab hours, which are probably the only other important thing, are on our site, as well as contact information

Why would someone visit our site?

The most probable reason is that they are looking for information. And putting all the important information somewhere that is sure to be kept up to date is what we want. Sure, facebook and twitter are good, but if everything goes there, what is the point of having a website?

rafilong commented 10 years ago

If we made an announcements tab, we'd probably just take information off of the emails.

Jon, nobody visits our site for news. It's for:

While we absolutely should have a blog-type thing using the same content as email newsletters, we don't have to yet. Wait.

However, if we have extra time, I agree it makes sense to have a page like that. Just not now - we have emails for that.

Ok, I am working on this now.

@tekknolagi You mentioned that doing this page with JS is an option. Should we attempt to do that?

Nevermind, just saw the email from Max. I will leave it to him.

...and learn from my mistakes. I pushed to master. (It's ok though — nothing VISIBLE changed.)
