Record store (business) model #112

Context

The me app is meant to be a self sovereign solution. Regarding data storage, this means giving the user the choice where they want to store it.

Storing in me (app)

If the user chooses to store their data in their app, for most people it will be linked to either their Apple ID or Google Account. Most modern smartphones perform regular backups. This means people can recover their data with Apple or Google if they loose their phone. For a big part of the general population, this is a sensible default.

Self management of data

If people are not comfortable storing their data with Apple or Google, they can turn off cloud storage for their app. Obviously this is not recommended. The user then carries responsibility of making a backup themselves. This is equivalent to storing all your savings under your bed, if your house burns down, you loose it all.

Record store service

Another option is to store the data with “Data Forus”, a (concept) organization that is specialized in personal data management. The business model is transparent: you pay for the service. Data Forus is like a Data Bank where people can voluntarily store their data. There should be an open market for this, where other companies offer similar services and where people are able to switch.

An advantage of storing the data like this, is that since data is stored online, services become possible that could not be done with the app. For example offering a web interface to the data, and offering online API services around data.

Note: in the context of Forus, people could pay from their voucher. The flow could go like this.
