.env fixes #37

Should fix #32 and #17.

@epilande can you test these commits on your machine? the new setup is:

  1. copy .env.template to .env, set vars according to your machine
  2. run each of the npm scripts and make sure nothing dies due to vars, especially setperms

Let me know if that works.
