The Embedded Systems Engineering role will specifically encompass the creation and technical application of embedded firmware for the operation and support of metering systems having FPGA architectures. The successful candidate will demonstrate a personal ability in critical thinking analyses as well as be self-directed and goal oriented in their work deliverables. Essential Functions • Work within the team to define, write, and improve embedded systems firmware • Utilization of the agile process in the development of design code meeting project milestones • Successfully communicate to peers and managers engineering details, concerns and tradeoffs • Determine and verify the electronic system requirements by analysis and modeling using simulation tools such as MATLAB or FPGA development tools • Monitor and research industry advances relating to embedded architectures and electronic systems • Design, model, implement, and test the electronic systems including: o Digital signal processing, specifically digital filter designs using tools such as MATLAB. o FPGA / DSP hardware development using VHDL / Verilog languages and vendor IP o Embedded software in ANSI C/C++ for microcontrollers and DSP with RTOS support. • Reading, analyzing and debugging schematics and PCB layouts • Lead the requirement analysis at a Product, System, Sub-System, and Component level • Develop design verification and validation plans for embedded code with hardware interactions • At times, support marketing, field service, sales, and direct customers regarding technical application • Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training opportunities • Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description, and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output • Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety to self and co-workers Required Education and Experience • At minimum, Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics with computer emphasis. • 7+ years of experience in working within a multi-functional team developing new products • 10+ years of experience in embedded system software design • Proficiency writing and debugging embedded software and FPGA design code Preferred Education and Experience • Previous experience working with open & closed loop systems • Software architecture design experience including RTOS • Prior experience in an instrumentation, metrology, or process control industry • Previous direct customer interface experience to define specifications and troubleshoot problems • Knowledge of advanced microcontroller designs • Design experience with electro-mechanical devices • Familiar with Industrial Serial Communication protocols (MODBUS, Profibus, etc.) Additional Eligibility Qualifications • Open minded to new approaches and is capable of out-of-the box thinking • Ability to communicate and motivate others towards a common goal • Works with a sense of urgency; action oriented • Proven problem solving skills • Excellent communication skills; spoken, written, and design/code documentation • Demonstrate good organizational skills and good follow-up techniques • Demonstrate responsibility, respect, dependability, patience, and productivity in the work environment • Ability to take analyses from diagnosis to implementation • Problem solver with excellent technical ability Supervisory Responsibility No direct supervision of others is required in this role. However, the individual will be expected to mentor, share learnings, and positively challenge and discuss ideas within the team and development process. Work Environment Some exposure to manufacturing and laboratory environments. Noise level may vary from moderate office environment to noisy / loud within the manufacturing, laboratory, or test areas. Proper personal use of safety equipment such as steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves must be adhered to for such conditions. Travel Travel (less than 25%) may be required at times, however specific frequency of travel will be dependent on needs of the product or system developments and overall business. Some travels are expected to be international, with occasional interactions of global teams, customers, facilities, technical consultants, and suppliers.
