: I'm not in favor of this. A majority of Org users are not opening Org buffers to write latex in. Or perhaps a better way to put it: Most Org buffers are not opened with the intent to contain LaTeX. Burdening all of them with the various checks this requires in hooks (pre-
and post-command-hook
, and the hot-loop after-change-functions
code) seems like a bad idea.
Undecided on numbering for now.

Thinking more on numbering, I'm leaning towards "yes".
Let's wait and see the effect of numbering on live-previews. If I can easily freeze numbering updates when live-previewing, it might be worth turning on numbering.
Note that we (obviously) won't turn on live-previews by default -- but someone who tries live-previews with the default settings might conclude that they're too slow/laggy to be useful without realizing that only the renumbering is bottlenecking it.
To enable the best experience with minimum configuration, it may be worth thinking about turning more features on by default.
Two in particular that come to mind for consideration are:

org-latex-preview-auto-mode
