JLCPCB quote seems high & missing SD #6

Hello Ted. Thanks for this wonderful open source resource. I'm new to making PCBs up. I think I have followed your instructions to the letter in JLCPCB, but its telling me $227 for assembly of the main board ? Can you confirm what I should expect to see there and I will try again.

Also to note that the SD card reader specified in the BOM is not available, so any advice about an alternative would be great. thanks

Hi Steve, thanks. Yep that is about the same as what I got just now. That is for 25 assembled boards. If you want fewer you can find an option to assemble as few as 2 panels (10 boards) and that will cut costs.

I couldn't find a direct replacement for the microsd card part but it was a quick replacement with another part. I just pushed some new files that have an in stock microsd.

Brilliant. Thanks Ted. I remain a bit confused about ordering the right quantity. I only want 5 of each board, not 25! Apologies for incompetence but can’t further advice would be great. Steve

Ah I see. The main version order 'panels' of PCBs, which include 5 data loggers per panel. I like this because it makes it easier to build a big batch, but I've heard from a couple others that this isn't ideal for testing.

Here is another version that fixes the missing parts and only orders 1 logger per panel. With these file, if you order a qty of 5 from JLCPCB you will get 5 data logger pcbs. More straightforward. I got ~$70 for 5 boards this way.

You can follow most of the ordering instruction, except:

Again – many thanks for this. I’ll try again. I’m aiming to build five of these to see how they are and potentially use results to leverage a partnership between my university in Manchester and local utilities companies and rivers trusts (all of whom want better info about sediment fluxes and water clarity) to build a larger network across the whole Mersey Basin. That would be a first in the UK. Fingers crossed!

JLCPCB are also missing the VCNL4010 ambient light sensors. I can find separately and build onto the board myself (with some help from local electronics techs) but if you have an alternative for those too, that would make the whole thing a lot more straightforward.

You’re walking the fine line between doing eth community a great service and being hassled by folks like me on a Friday afternoon…

Sounds like an interesting project! Clarity is definitely a good application for these sensors. I haven't explored it as much, but there is an ambient light measurement which captures a wide band of visible light at the sensor depth. I don't really know how to calibrate this, but it's an interesting qualitative measurement of clarity and light penetration.

Unfortunate that JLCPCB doesn't have the VCNL4010 in stock. Keeping parts in stock has been problematic since covid but getting better the past ~2 years. I would recommend against soldering the VCNL4010 yourself unless you (or your techs) have experience and equipment for SMD parts. Especially for 5 sensors, I would recommend this breakout board from adafruit, which is compatible with everything. Let me know if you can't find these in the UK. I have a several of ours left over from a batch order.

Thanks Ted. I can get the adafruit board, no problem, so will go with those instead of the turbidity board. It looks like the connections to the qwiccr plug will need adjusting. Steve
