e ngii a mei ukab ra renguk, a mla sidai rekau me ngak "a mla sidai rekau me ngak" = our past relationship.  Several people have told me that "sidai" is a relationship between two people, even though it closely resembles the Japanese word "shidai", meaning "dependent on"

I think that the "ngii" relates to that past relationship, and is what is coming, so using Charl's definition, you might say "our past relationship comes to touch my heart" ?  Is that a stretch?

I'm adding ukab er a rengul and changed sidai to include former (romantic) relationship between two people.

John - my understanding is that sidai is relationship, not past relationship.  Mla sidai puts it in the past.

Yeah that makes sense. But the other meaning about reminiscing makes it seem like those would be two totally dissimilar meanings which would be weird.

Agreed.  I've had several people give me very different meanings for that word (sidai), with each certain that their meaning was correct.  It would be good to know its Japanese origin, which might clarify it.  I have usually seen it written "sidai er kid" or "sidai rekau me ngak "

Unfortunately our Japanese expert Noah who always helped me tons in 1-1 fb messaging has yet to join our group. I asked him about joining recently and he's planning to join once his grad school fall finals are done...

That's beyond me.  I thought it should be as you write it, but I see it written often as rekau.   I figured it was one of the many things I still don't understand

Thanks. Jim, looks like people who write 'rekau' mean to write 'er kau.' We see this and similar misspellings pretty frequently. You feel comfortable changing it accordingly in our transcriptions? When you listen to the songs, how does it sound?

Hmm. Although I guess I'm still a bit confused as to ra before a pronoun since I thought 'a' wasn't used there. But good it's not rekau at least which would be even more confusing to me.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?  I think I'll transcribe these as "er kid" and "er kau me ngak" and assume that the extra vowel sound between the "r" and "k" is just a pronunciation thing, kind of like "ema", to smooth the transition between two consonant sounds.  Using "er" before the pronoun object is consistent with the grammar rules (at least the ones I know).  Uasei?

ukab is a japanese word ukabu which means come afloat or come to surface.

so in the song me ukab er a renguk a mla sidai er kau me a ngak means our relationship come to mind.(in a very romantic way).  rekau is an old spelling of Palauan er kau.  In songs they usually combine this prefix re- with other word.
