In one songbook, a line in the song "Eolt er a Melidiul" uses the phrase "mak mocha sumas er a renguk er ngii."  I see that "mo sumas" is also used in a tekinged example:  Meng kang locha mo sumas a belsel el demedemel aika al kawauso era daob el blal bekeuad adang melasm el chemiis era ilolk?  Does anyone know this word?

it seems to be a Japanese borrowing

Could be from the word Sumasmechii, (reconcile)

I know of "sumas" as used in the following example: Al sebechel e ke sumas a chelsengum e mer tial ongdibel. If possible, clear yourself of your obligations (or prior engagements) and come to the meeting.

I Googled "sumasu" (who doesn't use it, heh) and it is indeed a Japanese word. One definition has it as (to) finish or conclude and another has it as clarify or make clear.

And Sim, I think you mixed up the words. :) Sumesmechii is to bid farewell to one. If you're thinking reconcile, perhaps you were referring to sumecheklii/sumechokl.

Thanks Jelga.  It is funny how the line in that song is either "mak mocha mengeuid er a renguk re ngii" or "mak mocha sumas er a renguk re ngii."  Seems like they are saying opposite things (my feelings are confused vs my feelings are clear/finished [like, I'm over her!]), but then, sumas only shows up in one songbook so maybe it was a later modification of the song.  Thanks again

Jim, you're welcome. :) Do you have an audio for the song?

johnbent commented 1 year ago

jimgeselbracht@yahoo.com replied,

You can find the audio here (although, the audio isn't working on some browsers now, which I need to fix).  The only version that I have that sings "suma" is Terry Aitaro, and she seems to be singing from the one songbook I have that uses that word (same verse order, etc.).  Hopefully this link works for you https://ouchacha.wordpress.com/2017/01/18/the-message-in-the-wind/

Jim, it doesn't work, unfortunately.

jimgeselbracht@yahoo.com replied,

if you have the microsoft edge browser, it will work.  If not, I'll move it up on my priority list to fix it.  :-)

OK, I've fixed the problem, so the music should now play:  https://ouchacha.wordpress.com/2017/01/18/the-message-in-the-wind/
