I am wondering about the proper spelling for Arekemais / Charekemais.  I have seen it spelled both ways and would like to get it right.  Also, what is the difference between Ngerekemais and Arekemais/Charekemais?  I believe they all refer to T-dock.

Jim,

I've always known it to be Arkemais. And I've never heard of Ngerkemais.

Can someone confirm please that Arkemais is either a variant of Ngerkemais or propose that it is a different place?

Lukes-Imeyuns commented 1 year ago

I've only known it as Arkemais.

Thanks Lukes! Ulang, Souang, have you heard of Ngerkemais?

Does Arkemais mean "section of Koror near T-dock"?

johnbent commented 1 year ago

Google has heard of both:

Both terms show up in the old songs.  I was told "Ngerekemais is the section of Koror near T-dock and Arekemais is the Palauan name for T-dock." although that doesn't make sense since the Midori Maru was docked at Ngerekemais: Mak milsa Midori maru lulak ra Ngerekemais ema / ng ulak ra Ngerekemais ema rengmam a di medidelangel

It could also be the lisp on who is saying the word as well. I always heard my dad say Arkemais growing up, (bodo ngedub er a Arkemais). A Kamome Maru a ulak er a Arkemais e tuobed er a etiu el klok er a Sebadong.

A thought just occurred to me...

So in some old books and maps, like maybe even Kramer's...I cannot think of one in particular now... But I have seen where they use "Arkebesang" or "Arkabesang" when they refer to Ngerkebesang.

So I wonder if the original name was Ngerkemais and then along the way Arkemais was adopted....? Same as in Ngerkebesang...
